Flowers in Houdini
In this project I immersed myself in the 3D program Houdini with the goal of creating living, technically procedurally thought-out flowers that grow and unfold in real time. I wanted to build a system where each flower has its own personality, with variations in shape, movement and structure, inspired by the diversity of nature.
Using KineFX – a character animation tool – I was able to adapt the technique to plants and control how the leaves bent. It worked well and quickly produced natural movements, while the system made it easy to visualize how the blades interacted. A challenge was to achieve full realism, as all the leaves moved simultaneously and gave a less organic impression.
I learned the importance of understanding the basics of Houdini and VEX in order to debug and build procedural systems effectively. The result was a functioning, flexible system and a deeper one understanding of how technical tools can be used to create organic movements.
